Frequently Asked Questions About Acupuncture
1. Does acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture needles are extremely thin, and most patients find treatment very manageable. Sensations vary from person to person and may include mild pressure, tingling, heaviness, or a brief ache around the needle.
2. How many acupuncture treatments will I need?
Treatment plans vary depending on your condition, how long you have had symptoms, your overall health, and how you respond to treatment. After your initial evaluation, we will discuss a recommended treatment plan based on your individual needs.
3. What happens at my first appointment?
Your first visit begins with a discussion of your symptoms, health history, and treatment goals. We will evaluate your condition, answer your questions, and determine whether acupuncture is appropriate for you before developing a personalized treatment plan.
4. Does insurance cover acupuncture?
Affinity Acupuncture is in-network with BlueCross BlueShield and UnitedHealthcare. Coverage varies by insurance plan and by the condition being treated, so benefits should be verified before assuming acupuncture is covered.
5. What is the difference between acupuncture and dry needling?
Dry needling uses the same type of thin, solid-filament needles used in acupuncture and overlaps significantly with acupuncture techniques used to treat muscles, trigger points, and musculoskeletal pain. The main difference is typically how the treatment is described and the training of the practitioner. As a licensed acupuncturist with advanced orthopedic training, Dr. Alexander, DAOM, L.Ac, incorporates trigger point, motor point, and other orthopedic needling techniques as part of a comprehensive acupuncture treatment.

What Are Some Potential Benefits of Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is commonly used as part of a comprehensive approach to pain management and may also help support relaxation, sleep, mobility, and overall well-being. Individual responses vary depending on the condition being treated, how long symptoms have been present, and other health factors.
At Affinity Acupuncture, treatment is tailored to each patient. We commonly work with patients seeking care for chronic and orthopedic pain, peripheral neuropathy symptoms, women’s health and fertility concerns, and side effects associated with cancer treatment.
Our goal is not to replace appropriate medical care, but to provide personalized acupuncture and integrative treatments that can complement your existing healthcare plan and help you work toward better function and quality of life.
