Chronic Pain

Life is too short to live in pain.

The good news is, we can help. William Alexander, L.Ac., C.SMA, is one of the foremost acupuncturists for pain management in the Nashville area, especially for lower back pain. Recent studies have shown that acupuncture is even more effective in non-surgical chronic back pain than chiropractic care and physical therapy, and it may help people successfully manage and lessen chronic and acute pain without the use of pharmaceuticals.

Acupuncture’s ability to reduce pain quickly, safely, and without any harmful side-effects is why pain management is the most common treatment performed by acupuncturists. Using extremely fine, sterile, single-use disposable acupuncture needles, your acupuncturist will design a treatment specific to your individual needs, whether you are recovering from an injury to your joints, muscles, and tendons, or have chronic aches and soreness in these areas.

Peripheral Neuropathy

Numbness. Tingling. Weakness. Pain. These are all sensations caused by Peripheral Neuropathy, a result of damaged nerves outside of the spinal column and brain. Many factors can lead to Peripheral Neuropathy, and in most cases, there is no cure. Without treating the underlying causes, Peripheral Neuropathy can lead to organ damage and loss of extremities. William Alexander is experienced in cutting edge treatments that can help relieve the traits and symptoms of Peripheral Neuropathy, as well as assist in correcting some underlying conditions.

Musculoskeletal Pain

William is one of the few Certified Sports Medicine Acupuncture (C.SMA) practitioners in the state of Tennessee. To earn that credential, he completed the most advanced orthopedic and sports acupuncture certification available, SMAC with Matt Callison. Orthopedic, or Sports Medicine Acupuncture (SMA), uses principles and techniques of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Sports Medicine for an integrative approach focused on the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of musculoskeletal pain.

Acupuncture on specific locations, or points, on the body will reduce inflammation, calm the nerves, speed healing and provide pain relief. Acupuncture is especially helpful in treating chronic knee pain, back pain, carpal tunnel and arthritis. Affinity Acupuncture will develop a personal plan to treat your symptoms, incorporating acupuncture and other treatment options to help restore your body to optimal health.

Fertility & Women’s Health

Are you considering acupuncture to support you in growing your family? Many of our clients who once struggled with fertility have since conceived and carried healthy pregnancies to term. Some women, they did acupuncture alone. For others, they sought acupuncture in conjunction with IVF or IUI.

Over half of the world’s population is women, and many are living with symptoms of PMS and menopause, daily stress, infertility issues, cardiovascular disease, and other areas of women’s health.

Diet, environment, and lifestyle have tremendous impacts on the body. In the Western world, women frequently experience moodiness, cravings, cramping, and more every 28 days or so. Menopause has become a dreaded “thing”, carrying the weight of night sweats, hot flashes, hormonal curveballs, and worse – yes, worse. Women’s health issues are common enough in the US that they have become normal, but the severity of them is not natural. We’ll help you find your new normal – one with fewer mood swings, headaches, sleepless nights, hot flashes, and night sweats.

Postherpetic Neuralgia

Did you have chicken pox as a child? You may develop shingles as an adult, which is an often painful rash, typically on the left or right side of the torso. For most adults, the symptoms clear up in 2-4 weeks. For others, the pain continues after the rash has cleared up.

This is called postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), a complication from shingles that occurs when damaged nerve fibers send messages from your skin to your brain. These messages are often confused and exaggerated, and feel like persistent tingling, burning, or shooting pain. Some people experience sensitivity to touch and are uncomfortable with anything on their skin, including clothing.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a very common condition, with over 3 million reported cases in the US each year. Individuals with fibromyalgia often experience pain throughout the entire body (sometimes called widespread pain), fatigue and sleep disturbances which can often lead to mental and emotional distress. Researchers believe that people with fibromyalgia experience amplified sensations due to how the brain and spinal column process painful and nonpainful signals.

Gastrointestinal Disorders

Studies show that acupuncture is effective in a wide variety of gastrointestinal disorders. It has been found to “promote gastric peristalsis in subjects with initial gastric motility and suppresses peristalsis in those with active initial motility.”1 What does that mean? If you frequently experience discomfort due to your GI function (such as constipation, diarrhea, bloating, excess gas, spastic colitis), acupuncture and Oriental Medicine can offer you relief.
